When is Charity a Sin?
**When is Charity a Sin?**
King Yudhishthira had vowed to always give charity to his subjects. He possessed an inexhaustible vessel that would provide anything requested instantly. Yudhishthira was proud of his charitable deeds, believing they surpassed those of Shivi, Dadhichi, and Harishchandra.
Sixteen thousand eight Brahmins would daily visit his palace, receiving ample food and gifts. Lord Krishna noticed Yudhishthira's pride and took him to the netherworld, to the domain of King Bali. Bali welcomed them with great respect.
Lord Krishna, indicating Yudhishthira, asked Bali if he knew him. Bali replied that he did not. Krishna explained that this was Yudhishthira, the eldest of the Pandavas and a great donor, renowned for his generosity. Bali, however, remained humble and expressed that he had given nothing more than three paces of land to Vamana.
Krishna noted that despite Yudhishthira's fame, the people had forgotten Bali. Bali replied that this was the cycle of time; the present always outshines the past. He expressed joy in meeting Yudhishthira, the one who had outshone his own legend.
Krishna then revealed Yudhishthira’s inexhaustible vessel, explaining how it allowed him to feed and gift thousands of Brahmins daily, garnering great praise. Bali, shocked, questioned if such acts could be called charity. He pointed out that making Brahmins idle with constant charity was sinful. True charity should not make recipients lazy and idle.
Krishna asked Bali if he did not give charity or if his people did not ask for it. Bali responded that in his realm, even if someone were made the ruler of the three worlds, they would not become idle and expect daily sustenance. The Brahmins in his kingdom were devoted to their duties and would not accept charity without working for the welfare of the people.
Bali emphasized that the charity Yudhishthira was giving was detrimental to hard work and effort. Krishna smiled, and Yudhishthira realized his mistake, lowering his head in acknowledgment.
However, today’s politicians, for their vote banks, announce loan waivers and unemployment benefits, making the present and future generations idle and lazy.
